How to read the pool

The five buyer types — and what each one wants.

Each buyer type has a different sourcing playbook. Knowing which one fits your business is the difference between a single lukewarm offer and a competitive process with three bidders.

PE Platforms

Wrench Group, Apex Service Partners, SavATree

Private-equity-backed roll-ups building regional or national platforms. Pay premium multiples for operators that fit the platform thesis — recurring revenue, low owner dependence, clean financials. Below the platform threshold, they discount or pass entirely.

Strategic Acquirers

Davey Tree, Bartlett, ABM Industries

Public or large-private operators who acquire to expand geography or add adjacent services. Underwrite differently than PE — value your customer book and route density more than multiple growth math. Often the highest-price buyer for the right fit.

Franchise Systems

CertaPro, Five Star Painting, Monster Tree Service

Convert independents into franchise units. Bring brand recognition and national marketing, but franchise agreements typically include ROFR clauses and transfer fees. Attractive when your operator profile fits the franchise model.

Regional Consolidators

Ned Stevens, Trash Warrior, Rainbow Treecare

Metro-focused roll-ups without institutional PE backing. Move fast, know the local operator ecosystem well, sometimes pay above PE-platform multiples for a truly strategic tuck-in in their metro.

Search Funds / Individual Buyers

SBA-financed operator-buyers

Solo operators using SBA 7(a) financing to buy one business to own and run. Target the sub-$1M SDE segment. Pay 20-30% less than institutional buyers on the headline multiple but structure cleaner deals where the seller walks away in 90 days.

Common buyer-pool questions

People also ask

  • How do you know which buyers are active for my industry?
Our canonical buyer registry is built from public 10-K filings, funding announcements, industry association reports (IBBA Market Pulse, BizBuySell Insight), and PitchBook/Crunchbase deal activity. Each buyer is tagged with the industries they've publicly acquired in the last 24 months. When a firm exits an industry we retire the tag — no fictional or aspirational buyers.
  • Should I contact these buyers directly?
Almost always no. Institutional acquirers source through broker relationships, not inbound seller pitches. Direct outreach to a PE platform typically ends up in an associate's inbox and gets routed back to their broker network anyway. The fastest path in is a broker who has an existing relationship with the buyers you're targeting — which is what our matching flow is designed to route you into.
  • My industry isn't in the list. Does that mean no one buys businesses like mine?
No — it means we haven't built a canonical registry for that industry yet. Our data is deepest in home services (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, landscaping, pest control, restoration, cleaning, pool service, garage door, painting, junk removal, tree service) because that's where Main Street M&A activity has consolidated most. If you're in an adjacent category, the buyer types (PE platforms, strategics, franchisors) are the same shape — a specialist broker can point to specific active firms in your space.
  • Why don't you show buyer contact information?
Buyer contact routes belong to brokers, not directories. Even where a buyer's website exists publicly, the person who returns your call is not the person who evaluates deals. When you match with a broker on Your Exit Path who has an existing relationship at a target buyer, your business gets positioned inside that buyer's sourcing lens by someone the buyer already trusts. That's a materially different conversation.
  • What if my business is smaller than what these buyers target?
Then the tool shifts the recommendation toward search funds (individual buyers using SBA financing) and regional consolidators, which target the sub-$1M SDE segment. That's a real, active buyer pool — different playbook than the PE platforms, but it's how the majority of Main Street businesses in the $500K–$1.5M range actually sell.

From tool to action

Ready to talk to a broker who knows these specific buyers?

Every match is a vetted broker with verified deal history in your industry — and, wherever possible, an existing relationship with the acquirers you'd want to reach.
